Description

San Sebastian del Oeste is a magical town that is proudly part of the national heritage and was founded in early 1605 AD, consisting mainly of old farms and centuries-old houses that have seen the passing of the years as silent witnesses of its history, as well as the abandoned mines and fields that surround it, becoming the valuable legacy of tradition and history that it is today.

Let us take you on a journey through this time tunnel and take you back to the greatness that hides this beautiful place between the chinks of its aged walls and its wooden doors carved by craftsmen more than 3 centuries old. You will surely live one of the most fascinating stories of your life!

In the late 1700’s, there were about 10 Haciendas with gold and silver reducing plants and about 30 mines in the area. This beautiful town became a city in the early 1800’s and reached its maximum glory in the middle of the same century.

The mines stopped working during the revolution of 1910 and foreign companies moved to other places, when the last mine stopped working in 1921 and the town went into oblivion for many years, as in the early twentieth century the mines were exhausted and the town lost its precious metal luster and the town as such, seems to have entered a “time warp”, which now makes it one of its main attractions.

In its glorious past it was an extremely prosperous silver and gold mining town and in its heyday it had four times the population it has today which is known to be around 6,000 inhabitants.

On the outskirts of town you can visit some old haciendas, some of which are now in ruins, while others are meticulously restored to their former splendor such as the well known “Hacienda La Quinta”, which continues to proudly produce its delicious organic coffee, which is also one of its most exquisite attractions.

San Sebastian is also surrounded by ancestral trees such as pines, oaks and some fruit trees that are sheltered by the whitish fog that slowly fades while the sun’s rays slide slowly between their branches and illuminate the houses covered with tile roofs and what remains of the old haciendas that gave life at some point in its history to this magical and emblematic place in the Sierra de Jalisco.
