Fair question. Both routes climb the same dirt roads into the Sierra Madre, both stop at the El Salto waterfall, and both end with you rolling across the Jorullo Bridge, 470 meters of hanging bridge stretched 150 meters above the Cuale River.

What changes is how your body spends the two hours of riding, who in your group is allowed to come along, and how much dust ends up in your teeth. Here’s how we explain it to guests at the pickup point, without the sales pitch.

Choosing Between an ATV and an RZR in the Sierra Madre

How Each Machine Feels on a Mountain Trail

An ATV (a quad, or cuatrimoto if you want to impress your guide) is ridden, not driven. You straddle the seat, steer with handlebars and control speed with a thumb throttle. Most of our units are automatic or semi-automatic, so there’s no clutch to think about, but the bike still asks for your whole body. You lean into curves, shift your weight on climbs and grip a little harder over ruts. After two hours your forearms will let you know they were there. People who ride dirt bikes or snowmobiles back home usually fall in love with it.

The RZR is a Polaris side-by-side, and it drives like a car with a roll cage. Steering wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal, seatbelts. You don’t balance anything, so your attention goes to the canyon views instead of the next rock. Our fleet runs on 2024 and 2025 Polaris models, and the four-seat version is the only way to bring the whole family in one vehicle.

Neither route requires technical off-road skills. If you can drive, you can do either one, and a bilingual guide leads every group at a pace set for the slowest rider, not the fastest.

Who Can Drive and Who Can Ride

This is where most decisions get made for you, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

ATV

RZR

Minimum driver age

18

18

Driver’s license

Valid physical license (your home country’s license works)

Valid physical license (your home country’s license works)

Youngest passenger

8 years old

6 years old

Seats

1 (single ATV) or 2 (double ATV)

2 or 4

Maximum weight

110 kg / 242 lb single, 220 kg / 484 lb double

400 kg / 880 lb per vehicle

Collision fee at check-in

10 USD per unit

20 USD per unit

Physical effort

Medium to high

Low

Closest comparison

Riding a dirt bike with four wheels

Driving a car with a roll cage

The age gap matters more than it looks. A six- or seven-year-old can’t ride on the back of an ATV because they need the strength to hold onto the driver through sudden bumps. In an RZR they sit buckled into their own seat. If you have kids between 6 and 7, the RZR is the answer, full stop.

Two adults can also swap behind the wheel of an RZR during the tour, as long as both are over 18, both show their licenses at check-in and both sign the waiver. Swaps happen only at stops your guide picks.

Dust, Mud and the Season You’re Visiting

We’re heading into the dry season, which runs from November through May. That means sunny mornings, temperatures in the low 20s to around 30 °C (roughly 70 to 86 °F), and dust. Lots of it. We hand out bandanas and goggles at check-in, and you’ll use both.

On an ATV you’re fully exposed, so if you’re riding behind someone, you’re riding through their dust cloud. The RZR has an open cab, so it isn’t dust-proof, but the frame and windshield area take some of the hit. Either way, wear clothes you don’t care about.

June through October is the rainy season: mud, puddles and afternoon showers. Riders who love getting filthy say it’s the most fun time of year. Tours run in rain or wind, and if conditions turn dangerous we move you to another date or time.

Late October and November sit in a sweet spot. The trails are drying out, the mountain is still green from the summer rains, and the waterfalls along the route tend to keep some flow before the dry months take over.

Crossing the Jorullo Bridge on a Quad Versus a Side-by-Side

The bridge is the moment everyone is waiting for, and it feels different depending on your seat.

On an ATV there’s nothing between you and the view. You feel the planks under the tires and the open air on both sides, 150 meters above the river. It’s the bigger rush, and it’s the version people film for their friends back home (with a GoPro mounted on a helmet or chest strap, since handheld cameras aren’t allowed while riding).

In an RZR the cage and seatbelts give a stronger sense of security. The driver keeps eyes forward while passengers get to look straight down into the Cuale canyon. If someone in your group is nervous about heights, the RZR passenger seat is the gentlest way to cross.

What Each Option Costs

At the time of writing, the ATV + Jorullo Bridge tour starts at MXN 2,520. The RZR + Jorullo Bridge tour is priced by vehicle size, starting at MXN 4,640 for the 1 to 2 rider tier and MXN 6,000 for the 3 to 4 rider tier. Both include round-trip transportation from the pickup point, safety gear, a bilingual guide, the El Salto stop and a tequila tasting at the end.

The collision fee isn’t included in the online price. It’s paid at the registration area with a credit card in the main driver’s name (10 USD per ATV, 20 USD per RZR) and covers an estimated 500 USD in damage to the unit. Bring that card, because cash and other people’s cards won’t work for this.

For groups of three or four, put a four-seat RZR next to two double ATVs on the booking page and compare. The answer depends on your group, and it’s worth thirty seconds of math.

Our Honest Pick for Different Travelers

If you’re a couple chasing adrenaline, take a double ATV or two singles. You’ll be tired and grinning.

If you’re a family with kids between 6 and 12, take the four-seat RZR. Everyone rides together, everyone is belted in, and one parent can hand off driving duty halfway.

If it’s your first time off-road, or someone in the group is uneasy, the RZR takes the stress out of the trail without taking the fun out of the bridge.

If anyone has asthma, heart problems, back problems or is pregnant, neither vehicle is an option. That’s a firm safety rule for both, and the same goes for anyone under the influence of alcohol.

And if one activity isn’t enough, the combos stack the bridge with zip lines in the same day: ATV + Zip Line + Jorullo Bridge from MXN 3,740, or RZR + Jorullo Bridge + Zip Line from MXN 7,820.

Once you know which machine fits your group, the rest is quick. The RZR + Jorullo Bridge tour departs at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., with pickups in Zona Romántica, Las Glorias, Playa de Oro and Nuevo Vallarta. Check availability for your dates, choose the pickup point closest to your hotel and book your ATV or RZR tour directly.

Almost every WhatsApp message we get about mountain tours starts with the same question: should we take the ATVs or … Leer más

[453

post-19689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog

ATV vs RZR in Puerto Vallarta: Which Off-Road Tour Fits You

<meta name="description" content="ATV or RZR for the Jorullo Bridge?
