Our story is one of resilience. Founded in 1940, our Ejido lived for decades off traditional agriculture and charcoal production. However, in the early 2000s, we faced a crossroads: continue depleting our forests or reinvent ourselves to save them.
We chose life. In 2005, a visionary group of ejido members decided to trade charcoal kilns for safety harnesses, and axes for hospitality. We went from being farmers to becoming ecotourism entrepreneurs, training ourselves in management, languages, and vertical rescue techniques. Today, Puerto Vallarta Tours (operating Canopy River) is a model of cooperative success that protects 1,883 hectares of forest and supports hundreds of local families.
